More than 80% of drink-drivers are men

Tuesday 05 December 2017

Jersey Police launch their Christmas drink-driving campaign tomorrow, and the stats show it is male drivers who are most at risk of being caught.

Of the 143 drivers prosecuted for being over the limit last year, 72% were men - so far this year, 82% of those prosecuted are male.

This year's campaign targets those who still believe it is ok to just have a couple of drinks before driving, with the Police warning that both Honorary and States officers will be conducting road checks.

Acting Inspector Paul Smith, who is leading the campaign, said: “Campaigns such as this have for many years highlighted the irresponsible nature of drinking and driving and it is frustrating and disappointing that drivers are still being dealt with for this offence.

“It’s never okay to drink and drive, it’s simply not possible to say how much alcohol you can drink and stay below the limit. With the Christmas period of goodwill upon us please consider the effect of your decisions on others and y ourself. If you’re caught you face a heavy fine and driving ban, or even worse hurting you rself or others in a collision.”

The Police say that more than half of the prosecutions result from information provided by whistleblowers, and are urging islanders to call them on 612612 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 if they believe someone is about to drink and drive.
