Tesco comes to Jersey

Friday 02 May 2014

Their slogan might say "every little helps", but having Tesco’s ranges on sale in two new large supermarkets in Jersey is likely to give shoppers a lot more choice.

The Channel Islands supermarket group, Alliance, will be opening up shop in Jersey before the end of the year and plans to offer Tesco’s own ranges, which are already selling well in the group’s Guernsey store.

The company is about to start fitting out their first big supermarket that will create around 30 new jobs in the Island - they haven’t confirmed yet where the store will be.

Alliance say they are also close to signing another deal to open a second major superstore in St Helier which will be as large as the biggest supermarkets in the Island. There’s been speculation that this one will be opening on the old Ann Street Brewery site.

Managing Director Andrew Bagot said: “We are delighted to be able to finally make this announcement about coming back to Jersey, because we’ve been working on these plans for some time. We’re aiming to reduce the cost of the weekly shop while offering more value and choice to Islanders.

“The long-term partnership we have signed with Tesco allows us to sell products from across their ranges, from Everyday Value products right through to the Tesco finest range. We think that the time is right to make this investment, and we look forward to be able to make an announcement about locations soon.”

Tesco is the second-largest retailer in the world serving millions of customers a week online and in 12 markets across the globe. Alliance have seen customer numbers in Guernsey up by several thousand a week on last year since introducing their range.

Alliance used to run a Cash & Carry at Grève d'Azette in St Clement and currently sell the Cook range in the Island.
