Mulcaster Street to be pedestrianised permanently on weekend nights

Friday 12 August 2016

Jersey Police and parish officials say a trial run that involved closing off one of St Helier’s main roads to traffic on weekend nights has been such a success it’ll now be a permanent fixture.

From tonight lower Mulcaster Street – from the junction with Pier Road to the Weighbridge – will be closed to traffic from 22:00 until 04:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

The street is particularly busy because of the number of pubs, clubs, fast-food outlets, and restaurants that it links. It also leads to the main taxi rank at the Weighbridge.

With many people having been on a night out, and all leaving at the same time the area can become very congested, with people often spilling into the middle of the road. Police believe it is a potential accident black spot and are keen to prevent any serious accidents.
