Thursday 12 September 2019

An award-winning Jersey youth choir will be warming up their vocal chords in a concert this evening before jet setting to an international singing showdown in Italy.

No strangers to international competition, Musical Originals will be competing against children’s and adult choirs from around the world in at the Rimini International Choral Competition from 19 to 22 September.

The winner of the competition will be invited to compete in The 2020 World Choral Championship.

Musical Director Imogen Nicholls MBE hopes people will come and support the choir tonight before they head off across Europe.

“In preparation for the competition, we are performing our challenging contemporary classical programme of a cappella songs," she said.

The last time her choir, which is made up of boys and girls aged from nine to 18, competed at this prestigious event, they brought home two Gold Diplomas.

For some of the choir's youngest members, such as Ruby Le Masurier, it’s their first time taking part in an international competition.

“I am really excited about competing internationally for the first time," she said. "We have been busy all summer practising 14 songs, plus fundraising. We want to continue to make Jersey proud."

The short fundraising concert will be held at 18:30 on Thursday 12 September at the St. Helier Town Hall. Tickets are £10 and available on the door.
