Nearly 1,500 covid recoveries recorded – but one more death

Monday 02 August 2021

The number of recorded covid cases in Jersey has dropped by more than half, with nearly 1,500 people reported as having recovered since the weekend – but one islander who tested positive has sadly passed away.

The reported recoveries - which have slashed the total number of recorded positive cases by more than half from 2,523 on Friday to 1,193 today - follow changes to the way in which case numbers are reported.

The Government explained as it released the latest statistics: “A large number of recoveries are reported in today’s data. This is due to last week's change in the isolation period and the high number of positive cases identified 10-14 days earlier.

“A covid-positive person with no symptoms is deemed recovered once they have completed the required isolation period. Those with symptoms need to complete the required isolation period and be free of symptoms for 48 hours.”

No information about the individual who passed away was provided, other than the fact that they had died “in the community”.

The total number of deaths in the third wave now stands at two.

71 people have died after a covid diagnosis since the beginning of the pandemic, though 47-year-old James Keating, a popular member of the football community who passed away in hospital on 18 July, is yet to be officially added to the statistics.

The number of people in hospital also fell by seven over the weekend, with nine individuals still receiving care there. 13 care home residents are also recorded as having the virus.

169 new cases were identified over the weekend - the majority were inbound travellers (77), 49 were seeking healthcare, 34 were contact traced, six were picked up during workforce screening, two were identified upon admission to a health setting, and one via cohort screening.

774 people with the virus are unwell and showing symptoms, while 419 are not.
