Nearly 900 people in quarantine

Wednesday 16 June 2021

Nearly 900 people are now in quarantine after being identified as direct contacts of the island's 51 covid cases.

A total of 872 people are self-isolating, a rise of 85 on yesterday.

Out of those confirmed to have the virus, 34 people are showing symptoms, while 17 are not.

The four new cases identified in the past 24 hours were all inbound travellers.

The island's number of cases per 100,000 - 48.24 over a 14-day period - means that the island is now on Guernsey's 'watch list' for travel restrictions.

Express understands that the Ministers responsible for making emergency decisions in Jersey have been meeting today to discuss whether the island's covid reopening strategy and travel policies should change in light of rising case numbers and direct contacts, and an announcement on their decision is due this week.

Earlier today, Acting Medical Officer for Health, Dr Ivan Muscat MBE, made a plea to school staff, students, parents and the education community to "keep your guard up."

"We know how little it takes to set all the good work back and none of us can afford to relax just yet," he wrote.

"It is likely that schools will be affected by covid-19 cases before the end of this summer term, so we need to keep our guard up and continue to be prepared."

He further reminded recipients of the requirement for children to wear masks on buses, and encouraged continued lateral flow tests, physical distancing and ventilation in educational buildings to help stifle the spread of the airborne illness.

Dr Muscat also advised parents and guardians that children should self-isolate if they develop one of the three main covid symptoms: a new continuous cough, fever or high temperature, or change or loss of smell/taste.
