Sarah Ferguson was sworn in this morning as Jersey’s newest Senator and vowed to start “handbagging” from day one in her post.
Senator Ferguson won the by-election on Wednesday by 131 votes and was sworn-in today at the States chamber.
She said: “My son tells me I’m very good with my handbag, so all I can promise the voters is that I will use it!
“I think Jersey’s finances need a really careful re-examination and I will do all I can to uncover where I think the States are going wrong.”
Senator Ferguson said the low turn-out, just 19%, was due to many candidates having a similar agenda.
“Basically Sam Mezec, Christian May, John Young and myself all feel that there is something badly wrong in Jersey’s finances and of course, if we are all agreeing with each other on those fundamental aspects it does not make for a good debate.
“I’m delighted to have been elected though and I look forward to 20 months of hard work and wielding my handbag.”
