New stitch in time to mark 70th anniversary of the Liberation

Saturday 16 May 2015

Islanders can soon add their stitch to a new piece of the Island’s history.

A panel to mark the 70th anniversary of the Liberation has been commissioned to go with the Occupation Tapestry unveiled 20 years ago.

Wayne Audrain has designed both but this latest piece has a modern take on how the Island has marked Liberation Day over the years and even features a young couple taking a selfie.

He’s got the Bailiff and the Lieutenant Governor all sewed up as well as the Lighthouse memorial, the Westmount memorial and the medal awarded to Albert Bedane for saving the life of a Jewish woman during the Occupation.

Faces in frames feature Canon Clifford Cohu and Louisa Gould – Islanders who lost their lives  - victims of Nazism.

The panel will be touring round the parish halls this year along with an exhibition of Occupation stories and experts will be on hand to make sure no-one puts a stitch wrong.

Community Learning Director Louise Downie said: “Jersey Heritage has recruited a team of volunteer stitchers who will stitch the tapestry and also help Islanders to place their stitch. Many of these volunteers worked on the original tapestry and their efforts are greatly appreciated.”
