Teams of firefighters were called out yesterday afternoon to deal with a fire at Nigel Mansell’s former residence at Beauport.
The fire started at heating oil tanks, and it took three fire engines to tackle the blaze, working alongside the police and ambulance services.
No-one was hurt in the blaze, which is being investigated by specialist fire investigators.
Watch Commander Larry Vibert said: “Once in attendance the crew established that the fire involved tanks containing heating oil in a part of a building under renovation, the crews had to react quickly to stop further spread of fire to the adjourning part of the property.
“The fire was extinguished by fire fighters initially tackling the fire externally, but due to fire spread to the ground floor, two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered that part of the building to tackle the internal fire.
“Three fire engines, including the western on call firefighting appliance, police and the ambulance attended the incident, which was quickly brought under control.”
The incident happened while one crew was already dealing with an incident at the other end of the Island, and firefighters say that the second, more major callout stretched their resources.
