A new campaign is aiming to get men talking about how cancer has affected them after research showed just one in four men were accessing local support services.
Macmillan Jersey’s #GetMenTalking campaign came about after the charity noticed in the latest report of all cancer diagnoses in Jersey, 58% related to men.
However, the charity observed that, from its own data collection, just 23% of men were accessing the emotional, practical and wellbeing services it offers.
“We hope that [the #GetMenTalking] campaign will highlight the support that is available at Macmillan Jersey and to increase access of Men by whichever method or means that works best for them,” Service Manager Pam Aubert explained.
She continued: “Cancer will affect one in two people in their lifetimes, and there is a stigma out there that some men find it tough to talk.
“With cancer affecting so many of us Macmillan Jersey are keen to raise awareness of the support that is available to men when they are ready to access it.”
Kevin, a service user of the charity, said: “Macmillan Jersey was there for me from day one. They give you a warm welcome and the range of complementary therapies are amazing and a real boost to your wellbeing.”
Macmillan offers support ranging from help with practical issues such as money worries, going on holiday and advice about work, to someone who’ll listen, treat islanders with cancer to a relaxing massage and introduce them to other people going through something similar to ensure they do not feel alone.
To access its support services, visit The Oasis on the Second Floor of the Lido Medical Centre, St Saviour’s Road, St Saviour, Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00, or call 01534 498188.
