Over £200,000 spent on seaweed - but it’s still here

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that the States have spent a whopping £202,000 in the last five years on ridding Jersey of its sea lettuce problem.

So far there has been little success as the States are still investigating ways to alleviate the problem.

Infrastructure Minister Deputy Eddie Noel told the Express last month that a seaweed ‘eating’ machine will be used on Jersey’s beaches next month - initially for a trial period. He has also expressed his determination to try to find a way to solve the problem.

Other environmentally friendly methods have been suggested as the scourge of seaweed continues to blight the Island's beaches.
