Parking discounts extended for a year for electric vehicles

Monday 06 January 2020

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will continue to benefit from parking discounts in all Government of Jersey carparks for another 12 months.

Owners of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will continue to enjoy half price parking, while anyone buying a newly-registered electric vehicle will receive free parking for the whole year.

The eco-friendly parking permit scheme was launched in 2008 in a bid to encourage drivers to purchase low carbon-emitting vehicles. Only vehicles registered to individuals whose carbon emissions are below 50g of CO2 per kilometre travelled qualify.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, recently signed a Ministerial Decision to extend the scheme for another year.

“This scheme has been used by more than 300 vehicles so far, and I hope that it continues to incentivise drivers to invest in electric or hybrid vehicles," he commented.

“I am preparing to bring the Sustainable Transport Policy to the States Assembly, which will encourage people to contribute to Jersey’s ambition of reducing our carbon emissions. While this scheme comes slightly before the policy’s publication, it is indicative of the direction in which we are going.”

The news of the scheme extension comes just a few weeks after a local start-up announced they will be launching an all-electric vehicle sharing club providing cars, vans and bikes.

EVie members will be able to find, reserve, lock and unlock any club vehicle using the Evie app.

The app – funded entirely by private investors - is the brainchild of entrepreneur Gavin Breeze, owner of Ruellan's Garage Andrew Ruellan, and Michael Burrow.
