Providing quality green spaces has proved to be a walk in the park for the staff of two Jersey parks which have been flagged up for national recognition.
Coronation Park at Millbook and Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Park in St Brelade have been awarded Green Flag Status by Keep Britain Tidy – the mark of a quality park or green space.
Judges came over in May to visit them both and were impressed by their horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. They also looked at how the parks are managed and run.
It’s the first time Transport and Technical Services has put forward any of Jersey’s green spaces for the award.
Manager of Parks and Gardens for TTS Derek Noble said: “Jersey has some fantastic parks. We take great pride in looking after them and we receive many positive comments from the public. However, we have never properly compared ourselves against an independent standard. The Green Flag Scheme has allowed us to do this; it is a great indicator of our performance.”
The Transport Minister and his assistant Deputy John Le Fondre visited the parks this week to meet with staff and congratulate them on all their hard work.
TTS Minister Deputy Kevin Lewis said: “The staff at TTS do a marvellous job and it’s great and well deserved that they have now got this national recognition. Having good quality green space for the community to use and enjoy is very important and adds to our quality of life.”
