Pensioner facing assisted suicide charge

Tuesday 08 December 2015

A Jersey pensioner is facing prison after allegedly helping a woman to die in the UK.

Robert Chellingworth (68) appeared before Exeter Magistrates' Court last week and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance before a judge.

He is accused of ‘intentionally doing an act, namely agreeing to do everything he can to help the victim die, then travelling to her flat and remaining with her while she injected with a lethal drug and while she suffered the consequence of that injection, which was capable of encouraging or assisting the suicide’ of the woman.

The charge is dated from 3 August to 11 August, meaning the offence happened in Exeter sometime between those dates.

Attempting to kill yourself is not a criminal act in itself but assisted suicide is illegal under the terms of the Suicide Act (1961) and is punishable by up to 14 years' imprisonment.

Mr Chellingworth is due to appear before the City’s Crown Court next month.
