Plan to convert former café to apartment

Proposals have been put forward to convert a former St. Helier café into an apartment.

If Planning agree, the now-closed premises at 1 Val Plaisant will be turned into a 53sqm one-bedroom home with two windows facing into Val Plaisant.

Axis Mason, which has developed the scheme on behalf of Style Group, explained in its planning application that the design would incorporate elements to minimise carbon footprint, such as insulation, "high performing double-glazed" windows, and energy-efficient lighting.

"In order to conserve the islands water resource with the associated requirements of storage and volumes of usage the water being proposed for use in this development will be designed on the basis of 110 litres per day per person and the developer will review options for grey water and heat recovery from showers," the application adds.

To enable the conversion to take place, an application has been put forward to officially change the use of the premises from Class B (Cafés and Restaurants) to Class J (Residential Institutions).

The application, which has been graded as 'minor', is before Planning and a decision is expected this autumn.
