Jersey’s biggest oyster farm has been granted permission to build on a green zone site in Grouville to develop the Island’s aquaculture industry.
The Jersey Oyster Company is building on a site on la Grande Route des Sablons so that it can expand its export business and create a real Jersey product.
The company is looking to improve its facilities for oyster breeding, production and packaging, close to the shore.
The company has had its plans passed to build a single-storey extension, a salt water lagoon, 12 salt water purification ponds and a pumping house on land in Grouville.
They’ll cultivate seed oysters in the nursery ponds so they won’t have to import young oysters from elsewhere and will be able to restock the oyster beds when needed.
They’ll be able to package oysters in the new extension so that their oysters can be sold directly to the retail market.
Development isn’t usually allowed in the Green Zone but the Planning Department say the Island Plan supports proposals that aim to extend existing employment sites without serious impact to the landscape.
Three main suppliers currently operate in Jersey exporting over 550 tons of oysters per year.
