Plans for record breaking tea party for the over 55's

Thursday 03 March 2016

It won't just be tea for two next month - a group of local students want to hold the biggest tea party in the world.

They hope to be pouring cups and cups of it for the over 55's on Wednesday 16 March at Highlands College and want local care and residential homes to join in and hold their own tea parties too.

They are studying Travel and Tourism at Highlands and are working with the National Association of Care Caterers for Worldwide Hydration and Nutrition Week 2016 to raise awareness of the importance of good nutritional care and staying hydrated and to try and break the current Guinness World Record at the same time.

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that both malnutrition and dehydration cause over 420 deaths in social and healthcare settings every year in the UK and they think afternoon tea is a good way to hydrate you and boost the calories.

The grand Afternoon Tea Party will run from 3 pm until 5 pm at Highlands College and the students are inviting the Island's senior citizens who live either on their own or in residential communities to come along for a cuppa.

Tickets are free, but the students hope to raise some cash for local charities.
