Police confirm two bodies found near trawler wreck

Tuesday 13 December 2022

Jersey Police have confirmed that two bodies have been found near the site of the fishing trawler L'Ecume II, which sank in St. Ouen's Bay after colliding with a freight vessel.

They added that the search and rescue operation is continuing.

Respected fisherman Michael Michieli - known by many as ‘Mick’ - was one of three on board L’Ecume II when it collided with the 126m Commodore Goodwill en route from Guernsey at 05:30 last Thursday morning.

Two fishers from the Philippines were also on board the trawler: Larry Simyunn and Jervis Ramirez Baligat had been working alongside Mr Michieli.

According to Mr Michieli's daughter, Rebecca, the Mr Baligat and Mr Simyunn would spend up to "nine months at a time" working on the trawler, and would send home "a good proportion of the money they made to their families back home in the Philippines."

Yesterday, Rebecca set up a fundraising page to support their families, with a target of £3,000, but has already raised more than £80,000.

Family members continue to be supported by specially trained Police Family Liaison Officers.
