Police crackdown on traffic infractions

Tuesday 16 October 2018

570 people were stopped, four drivers arrested and two cars scrapped as a result of a week-long Police campaign to crack down on driving violations.

‘Traffic Focus Week’ increased vigilance on Jersey’s roads to catch red light jumpers, drink drivers and speeders to prevent accidents caused by motoring offences.

Police officers and their Honorary colleagues conducted road checks on the lookout for infractions, while Driving and Vehicle Standards (DVS) focused on defective vehicles.

In just one week, a total of 570 vehicles were stopped and 80 drivers were breathalysed. These tests resulted in two men and one woman being arrested for drink driving.

69 speeders were stopped and three people were reported for using their mobile phones whilst driving. Officers also stopped 24 red light jumpers and four people were caught not wearing their seatbelts.

DVS staff working with officers found 124 defective vehicles,12 of which were impounded and two scrapped altogether.

Commenting on the initiative, Inspector Andy Bisson, who headed up the campaign, said: “We are committed to reducing the injuries caused by road traffic collisions and with our partner agencies we are looking closely at the issues that cause these collisions.”

Last week saw the Police concentrate their resources in the areas they received the most complaints about traffic-related hazards.

Police also urged all road-users to be conscious of others with the changing season bringing lower visibility and poor weather conditions.
