Police drug search at De La Salle

Wednesday 29 January 2014

Police carried out a full search of De La Salle School after a tip-off about pupils using former "legal highs".

The two uniformed officers are understood to have searched at least one locker at the Catholic fee-paying school yesterday morning but they didn't find any drugs, and no students were arrested. Parents were made aware of the police visit.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Beechey said: “The States of Jersey Police receives intelligence from a wide range of sources on many different subjects and some of those intelligence reports will inevitably involve those in the education system.

"Yesterday, with the consent of the head teacher and the school, we responded to some such intelligence about new psychoactive substances at De La Salle Secondary School. As a result a search was conducted and no drugs were found. No arrests have been made.

"We continue to work with the school and the pupils to ensure that everyone knows the dangers of new psychoactive substances and the damage they can and have caused."

Although police officers often talk to pupils about the dangers of drug abuse, school searches by police officers are rare.

No-one from De La Salle was available to comment this morning. The school's website says that it has a "zero tolerance policy" on illegal drugs and that anyone caught bringing drugs into the school or in possession of them will be permanently excluded.
