Big demand for new iPhone

They might not be setting up camp outside the shop yet but pre-orders show people are keen to get their hands on the new mobile phone that’s gone on the market today.

The iPhone 6 won’t be available in the Island until the middle of next month but around 200 people have already ordered them in advance.

iQ Director Tim Evans said stock will be limited because Apple tend to keep the initial shipments to themselves but that most customers seem quite happy to wait until they reach the wider market.

The new model, the eighth generation of i-Phone, is one of the slimmest smartphones on the market.

One of its big selling points is Apple Pay that allows you to make contactless payments on your phone to major international banks and payment processors and the company is reported to have teamed up with Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

It’s something its new owners here won’t be able to take advantage of straight away though because there is no iTunes store in the Island but Mr Evans said he hopes this will soon be resolved.

Mr Evans said: "We can't make any comment on this at the moment except to say that we have been assured that, globally, the smaller jurisdictions are being worked through by the iTunes team and jersey is high on the list to be resolved as soon as possible. 

"I would hope that by the time Apple pay is more widely accepted globally we would officially have iTunes in the Channel Islands.”
