Progress Party leader seeks return to St. Brelade

Tuesday 10 May 2022

Progress Party leader Steve Pallett has confirmed that he is standing for Deputy in St. Brelade, the parish where he was Constable for two terms before becoming a Senator.

Senator Pallett, who was first elected to the States in 2011, is a former Assistant Minister, first with responsibility for sport and then adult mental health services.

Latterly, he has been a scrutineer of Government, chairing the Migration and Population Review Panel. Recently, he lodged a successful proposition calling for a review of rehabilitation services following their move from Samarès Ward at Overdale to Plémont Ward at the Hospital.

His party has formed a coalition with the Jersey Liberal Conservatives to present a joint manifesto, to support the latter organisation’s leader, Sir Philip Bailhache, as candidate for Chief Minister, and not to compete against each other in districts.

However, fellow Progress Party candidate Steve Bailey is also standing in St. Brelade.

Senator Pallett said: “I retain the same energy and enthusiasm that I had when successfully standing for election in 2011 and have  the necessary experience and leadership skills to not only  provide the representation that parishioners need in a parish that I know so well, but also the island more generally as Jersey recovers from the effects of the pandemic, Brexit and the political instability we have seen recently in Eastern Europe.

“I fervently believe that party politics offers islanders an increased level of accountability in their politicians, as the island looks to restore its faith in a political system that many feel has let them down.

“As leader of the Progress Party and as part of our coalition with the Jersey Liberal Conservatives, I understand the financial difficulties that many I will seek to meet on the doorstep face and we will seek to support islanders most in need be they young families, pensioners or those on lower incomes.

“The cost of housing, fuel, food and clothing - in fact, all costs - have dramatically increased in recent months, leading to a headline rate of inflation of over 6%. As a coalition we will look to reduce the inequality that exists, and is widening, to ensure all islanders are given equal opportunity to succeed.”

Progress Party deputy leader Steve Luce, who is currently Deputy of St. Martin having been elected in 2011, 2014 and 2018, has also confirmed that he will be standing in the new district of St. Martin and Grouville.

Deputy Luce's previous constituency was St. Martin, but the parish has been merged with Grouville to create a new joint electoral district.

The election will be held on Wednesday 22 June.
