With thousands left dead and hundreds of thousands without food, shelter or housing, a major public appeal to help alleviate the humanitarian disaster following the earthquake in Nepal has been launched to add to the £90,000 already donated by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission.
Bailiff William Bailhache has described the unfolding disaster as a “a human tragedy on a massive scale” as the official death toll from Saturday’s earthquake reached 5,000.
The country’s Prime Minister has warned that the final death toll could be as high as 10,000.
Mr Bailhache has launched a disaster appeal, and has asked Islanders to give what they can.
He said: “What has happened in Nepal is clearly a human tragedy on a massive scale and I am sure that Jersey will be keen to show its support to those who so desperately need emergency supplies, be it in the form of essential medicine, clean drinking water, food or shelter.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal, those around the world who are desperately waiting news of lost loved ones, and those who are providing the front line emergency services operating in such difficult circumstances. It is, of course, some relief to know that the two Jersey women in Nepal and believed to be safe and well.”
