Gathering restrictions and non-essential shop closures extended

Tuesday 05 January 2021

Restrictions on gatherings and a ban on non-essential shops opening have been extended by a fortnight.

A previous order making it illegal for more than 10 people to come together was due to run out at midnight tonight.

Another order, which closed all non-essential retail from Christmas Eve, was also due to expire. Both have been extended to Wednesday 20 January.

Both orders, however, will be reviewed by Ministers on Monday.

Health Minister Richard Renouf said: “When we introduced these measures we anticipated that the restrictions would remain in place at least until Monday 11 January, and said we would review their impact in the first week of January.

“We will be discussing the impact of these measures at a meeting on Wednesday, and will announce any changes by the end of this week. The orders can be amended at any time to reflect the changes.”

Government guidance remains that people should not meet in each other’s homes or gardens but should meet outdoors, where it is easier to keep a physical distance.
