A senior official in the Education Department has been sentenced to 15 weeks in prison after admitting downloading indecent images of children from the internet.
60-year-old David Gerald Berry was sentenced by Magistrate’s Court on Friday after he had pleaded guilty in February.
As well as the prison sentence, he was given a five-year restraining order and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.
Police were alerted by an external agency that a number of indecent images of children had been downloaded between June and October last year by someone at the address where Berry lived alone.
Police executed a warrant under the Protection of Children’s Law at the address in October, where officers seized digital devices owned by Berry.
The States of Jersey Police Digital Forensic Unit recovered a total of 357 category C images – the lowest category of severity - on two different devices.
After his sentence, the police said that anyone who has concerns about suspected child sexual abuse or exploitation can contact the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub on 519000 or the Public Protection Unit at Police Headquarters via 612612.
Sexual assault referral centre Dewberry House can be contacted on 888222.
