Seven now standing for vacant Senator post

A seventh candidate has stepped forward for the senatorial by-election to replace Senator Zoe Cameron.

Mary O’Keeffe-Burgher, Chief Executive of international property buying agents Andium HVR Global, joins six other candidates in the race for the seat.

She said: “I am honoured and excited to announce my candidacy for Senator in the States of Jersey.

“My reason for standing is simple: giving people a choice in this by-election. We have no women Senators in the States and this is unequal and unrepresentative.

“I intend to work tirelessly to make Jersey an even greater place to live, work and raise a family than it already is, ensuring that everyone in the Island has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“Governing an Island as diverse and complex as Jersey is not simple and there are limits to what the Government can do. Jersey doesn’t need reform, it needs strengthening"

Also declared are sitting States member Deputy Sam Mezec, former politicians Sarah Ferguson and Guy de Faye, lawyer and activist Christian May, human rights campaigner Mike Dun and singer and entertainer Stevie Ocean.

Nomination meeting for the by-election is being held at the Town Hall at 19:30 on August 9. Voters will have until noon today to ensure that they are on the main Electoral Register and up to noon on Wednesday, August 31, to be on the Supplementary Register. The by-election is on Wednesday, September 7.

The by-election was prompted due to the shock resignation of Senator Zoe Cameron. She quit in frustration at the beginning of the month saying she had been cold-shouldered by the Council of Ministers.
