"We need to ensure the government’s buildings are... up to scratch"

Plans to ensure the government's property portfolio is "up to scratch" are being developed with the help of a public survey.

Islanders are being asked to give their opinions on the government buildings they use, some of which Infrastructure Minister Tom Binet has said are in "not quite so good" condition.

In 2021, a Public Accounts Committee report concluded that the government was not managing its substantial property portfolio "in an efficient way to maximise its effectiveness and value for money for the taxpayer".

The Property Holdings team are currently developing a 20-year portfolio plan as part of the Island Public Estate Strategy, which sets out the framework for managing government assets until 2035.

Infrastructure Minister Tom Binet said: "We need to ensure the government’s buildings are suitable and up to scratch so that we can provide services to Islanders to the highest possible standards. It makes such a difference to users and staff if our buildings are of the right calibre, comfortable and easily accessible. Some of our buildings are in good condition, whilst some are not quite so good."

He continued: "We’re doing this survey to find out what Islanders think, and what ideas they have for improving the buildings. One of my priorities is to ensure effective and efficient co-ordination across our estate, and to make sure we have a good understanding of the investment needed."

Participants are asked to give feedback on the suitability of Government of Jersey properties with respect to lighting, noise, layout and accessibility among other factors. It will close on Tuesday 11 April.

A separate internal survey for Government of Jersey employees is also taking place.

"I encourage Islanders to use this opportunity to tell us which of our properties are working for them and which aren’t," Deputy Binet added.
