Spiritual shop sale spells “end of an era”

Tuesday 12 November 2019

A business which has enchanted islanders for almost 15 years is up for sale, marking the “end of an era” and a new beginning for the spiritual shop’s owner.

Home to all things magical, ‘Wizards and Woozles’ has been a charming part of Jersey’s high street since 2005, but now the current owners are looking for someone new to harness its powers.

Express caught up with the quirky shop’s current owner Nikki Fryer who is hoping that a “passionate” new entrepreneur will fall under its spell.

Nikki has owned the shop for almost six years after taking it over from her sister, Azlanna, who started the business back in 2005.

Selling everything from crystals and incense sticks to tarot cards and runes, the family business specialises in the spiritual.

A note on the door of the shop describes the venture as “a unique business opportunity.”

It reads: “Due to personal reasons, this rare and successful business is currently up for sale. If you love working with the public, have always had an interest in running your own business and want to hit the ground running with an already established and lucrative business, then this might be the opportunity for you.

“With a very established and loyal customer base earned over 14 years of customer service, established brand and USP, there is nothing to do except open up and continue selling with this magical and successful little shop.”

Over the years, Nikki tells Express that there have been many ups and downs and she reminisces about some of them.

One of the biggest challenges, she says, was the hassle of moving the shop one door down on New Street: “The biggest challenge was definitely moving premises, it was only one door down, but we have so much stock it was a massive job.

“I'm lucky my family are so supportive and they all mucked in, we got it done in four days… working through the night. It was worth it though as we have so much more space and light!

Speaking about her fondest memories, Nikki reflected: “I have so many lovely memories, mostly of people coming in after they've purchased a crystal for a specific purpose - such as fertility - then they come in pregnant. Or someone that's had an illness and then they come in feeling so much better, and healthier, it's so rewarding.”

Now, Nikki is looking for some capable hands to entrust with her family’s longstanding business.

She told Express that the new owner “need[s] to be passionate about the products we sell” as well as being “able to give good advice and listen to people.”

Having to move on from running the business for family reasons, Nikki said she’s really sad to leave ‘Wizards and Woozles’ behind her but she’s looking forward to what the future holds.

When asked what’s next for her after she finds a buyer for the business, Nikki is hoping for “a little rest” in between doing up her house and trying to travel some more.

“It's the end of an era, and it's going to be sad, but I'm not a person that looks back. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I'm looking forward to new opportunities.”
