Contenders for sports personality award revealed

Monday 10 January 2022

The shortlist for the Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year award have been revealed.

The contenders span the disciplines of football, athletics and cricket, and voting has now opened for the Betway-sponsored award.

Here are the shortlisted candidates...

Alex Scott, Footballer

In the world of football, Alex Scott - billed by some as the 'Guernsey Grealish' - has been nominated after ending the year as a Bristol City first-team regular, and tipped by national press as a player with potential to "break through" in the new year.

During the last 12 months, he has signed his first professional contract, made his Championship debut, was awarded with another new contract, scored three league goals and played for England Under 20s.

Maya Le Tissier, Footballer

He's not the only footballing prodigy from Guernsey either - Maya Le Tissier is also nominated, with her team, Brighton, getting their best ever finish in the Women's Super League in 2021.

She played with The Seagulls as they became the only side to beat eventual champions Chelsea, and was a regular as they reached the FA Cup semi-finals.

She was also Brighton's Young Player of the Year, played for England's Under 23s and was named as one of the most promising young players in the world by 'Goal'.

Cameron Chalmers, Athlete

Meanwhile in another area of Guernsey sport professionals, Athlete Cameron Chalmers has been nominated after representing Team GB at The Olympic Games in 2021 in Tokyo.

Competing in the men's relay, he ran three times overall with his best performance coming in the 400m mixed relay final where the team finished sixth, narrowly missing out on a medal.

Charles 'Chuggy' Perchard, Cricketer

And for Jersey's nomination, Jersey Cricket Captain, Chuggy Perchard, brought his team one step closer to qualifying for the T20 World Cup.

He skippered the side at Jersey six games out of six at the European Qualifiers in Spain, finishing the tournament as the leading wicket taker and putting in a man of the match performance against Denmark.

He now is looking set to captain the team again when they travel to Zimbabwe for the global qualifiers later this year.

Islanders can vote until the broadcast of the awards on Thursday 27 January through the following numbers:

  • Cameron Chalmers – 0845 606 55 01
  • Maya Le Tissier – 0845 606 55 02
  • Chuggy Perchard – 0845 606 55 03
  • Alex Scott – 0845 606 55 04

Betway's Anthony Werkman said: "2021 has been an excellent year of sport for the islands, the nominations demonstrate the outstanding achievement by Channel Islands sports men and women throughout 2021.

"We are looking forward to an exciting evening of celebration and congratulate all those who have been shortlisted."
