'Spy Dog' author to headline Festival of Words schools programme

Saturday 12 May 2018

Andrew Cope, the author of the popular Spy Dog series, will be one of many children’s authors meeting young readers in September during the fourth Jersey Festival of Words as part of the Santander International schools programme.

Graphic novelist Robin Etherington, who penned the 'Freaky and Fearless' series, Laura Ellen Anderson, who created the ‘gloriously gothic, wickedly funny’ new series Amelia Fang, and Adam Frost, the man behind the 'Awesome Book of Space,' will also be taking part in this year's schools programme.

As well as providing an insight into the fictional world of Lara the canine spy, Andrew Cope will visit schools to run workshops on ‘The Art of Being Brilliant,’ in which students will learn how to ‘shine in any situation.’

UK performance poetry group Farrago will return to run a multi-school poetry slam which will see secondary students crafting original poetic pieces before performing them to a panel of local judges on the Opera House stage. John Paul O’Neill, Farrago founder, said: "We’re really excited to be part of this year’s festival and looking forward to working with Jersey’s brilliant young poets and fantastic schools."

Key Stage Five students will also attend an event led by author Laura Stevens, whose new novel 'The Exact Opposite of Okay' has been described as a "switched-on exploration of teenage sexuality and gender."

Since its launch in 2015, the Jersey Festival of Words has been providing events and workshops for local schools with the aims of bringing star writers to the Island, to provide a boost to home-grown creative writing and support education, heritage and event-led tourism.

Paul Bisson, Jersey Festival of Words Vice-chairman, said: "It’s great to watch students getting enthused about books and reading. The writers’ stage shows are always hugely entertaining and there’s a real buzz when the children get to meet the authors and have their books signed."

This year's Festival, which will take place between 26 and 30 September, sees Santander International sponsoring the schools programme for the second year. James Pountney (pictured left with Pippa Le Quesne Festival Programme Director), Managing Director of Santander International said: "We’re delighted to once again be sponsoring the Schools Programme. It was incredible to see Jersey Opera House come alive last year as children of all ages enjoyed hearing from different authors. We’re excited to see what this year’s lineup brings."
