St Christopher’s spuds smash it again!

Sunday 29 May 2016

Youngsters from St Christopher's primary school are top of the crops again this year – beating off competition from thousands of other green-fingered primary school children to grow the heaviest crop of Jersey Royals.

Reception J’s crop came in at a weighty 1.315 kg in the hotly-contested Genuine Jersey Potato Growing Competition, ahead of Bel Royal who were runners up for the second year running too.

St Peter’s Reception class grew the most tubers this year, closely followed by Class three at Mont à l’Abbé who were runners-up.

All the children have been nurturing their spuds in buckets since February as well as learning how plants grow and where their food comes from.

They’ve also been finding out the history of the Island’s famous spuds and youngsters at St Lawrence, who featured on last week’s BBC Countryfile programme getting their spuds weighed, proved they’ve learnt a lot – winning the prize for the best course work again.

This year the children at St Mary’s won a judges’ special commendation for their presentation on the Jersey Royal.

Genuine Jersey’s Chief Executive John Garton said: “Sunday’s BBC Countryfile was a great showcase for the Jersey Royal and I’m pleased that the celebrations have been able to continue this week.

“The Grand Weigh-in is always fun but there is a serious side in that it teaches us all – especially the children – about the importance of our principal crop. We may buy our Royals from a supermarket or roadside stall but a huge amount of effort goes into growing them.”

The competition, now in its tenth year, attracted a record number of entries. This year, the 50,000th primary school pupil took part.
