St. Helier has created a new 'Shadow Conseil' to advise on the development of parish policies.
Four members were elected to the advisory committee at a meeting at the Town Hall last night: Reform Jersey Chairperson Lyndsay Feltham, Advocate Barbara Corbett, Malcolm L’Amy and Mario Pirozzolo.
They will join the Constable, Roads Committee and Procureurs du Bien Public to form St. Helier’s Shadow Conseil Municipal.
The meeting saw a total of seven candidates - which included Ted Vibert, Jason Lagadu and Noel Flood - introduce themselves, explaining their background and their motivation for standing to join the Conseil.
The Constable then opened the floor to questions. Members of the Assembly asked candidates their views on a broad range of subjects, including tackling town traffic and congestion; the Island Plan and proposed development in St.Helier; the candidates’ portfolio preferences; arts, heritage and culture in the Parish, and the future of Fort Regent.
The vote was carried out by secret ballot, with each member of the Assembly able to vote for up to four candidates.
Senator Sam Mézec congratulated Mrs Feltham on her election, writing he was confident she would be "a strong voice for town residents in supporting improved services and support delivered by the Parish".
He also congratulated Advocate Barbara Corbett, whom he described as "a staunch supporter progressive reforms to support families".
No nominations were received for the Shadow Conseil’s youth member, so the Constable decided to leave the position open. The Assembly will be asked to consider nominations for this role in 2020.

The Shadow Conseil is an advisory committee. While it will not have any statutory powers, the parish said its establishment seeks to test the concept of a Conseil, support and advise on the development and implementation of Parish strategies and policies, and support discussions with government on development of a Conseil Municipal.
It is likely to consider a wide range of issues over the coming months, including, but not limited to, climate change and environmental policies and issues, recycling and waste collection, anti-litter strategies, transport and policy issues, town vibrancy, and community support and engagement.
The meetings of the Shadow Conseil will be open to the public to attend. The first one is scheduled for 18:00 on 15 January 2020 at the Town Hall.
