Young heads asked for thoughts on future of finance

Sunday 23 September 2018

Jersey Finance is picking the brains of the island's young people over how the island's key industry will look in future.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the industry in Jersey, the ‘Finance 2061' competition will put the question, 'What will the finance industry look like in the future?' to local students in years 11 to 13 as part of a new competition organised by Jersey Finance.

Designed to provide an insight into what young people regard as key issues, the competition will see students write 500 words setting out how they feel the finance industry might evolve over the coming decades and what main challenges the industry might face.

Participants are free to choose the focus, scope and style of their piece, which will be judged for its originality and presentation. The winner will receive a £500 voucher for the iQ shop in St. Helier as well as £500 for their school. The winning piece will also be published through Jersey Finance’s social media channels.

The judging panel for the competition will include Claire Lyons, Senior Campaign Manager at Jersey Finance; Lewis Bush, Archisle Jersey Photographer in Residence, who is currently focussing on Jersey’s finance industry in the context of Brexit and Kevin Keen, Founder of Leadership Jersey.

Commenting on the initiative, Jersey Finance CEO Geoff Cook, who recently announced he will step down after 12 years at the helm of the body, said: “As a forward-thinking jurisdiction, we’re very aware that our local students are the future of our industry and it’s so important that we engage with them as best we can. Getting their thoughts on how they perceive our finance industry and how they see it evolving will be fascinating in itself but it will also be really important in how we map out our future activity.

“This initiative is an exciting first for us and we really hope that it inspires students from all schools to put their ideas on paper.”

Students should send their entries to jersey@jerseyfinance.je, along with their name, the name of their school and what year they are in before 26 October. More information can be found online
