Teenage boy saves brother from house fire

Saturday 23 January 2016

Firefighters have commended a 16-year-old boy who saved his brother from a house fire yesterday afternoon.

The boy was having a shower when he heard smoke alarms going off in the house.

When he came downstairs he found the house filling with smoke and a fire in the kitchen – but instead of trying to tackle it himself, he called the Fire Service, alerted his brother, and the pair of them left the house straight away.

Firefighters have praised the boy, saying that he did exactly the right thing.

When they arrived at the scene, a team of firefighters found that the blaze had been caused by a carrier bag that had drifted into an unattended candle.

Two firefighters went into the smoke-filled house with breathing apparatus on and put out the fire, and used a mechanical fan to clear the home of smoke.

In a statement, Crew Commander Terry Noel said: “The Fire Service reminds the public about leaving candles unattended, even for a short period of time, however it also commends the young man for his actions, who wisely made no attempt to tackle the fire, instead choosing to evacuate with his brother.”
