Teenagers hauled to safety after getting caught out by Spring tides

Friday 08 April 2016

Three teenage girls had to be rescued and hauled up the sea wall at West Park yesterday evening after getting caught out by the Spring tides.

The Coastguard were called out just before 5.45 pm after members of the public spotted the girls trapped by the incoming tide.

The Coastguard called out firefighters to help and when they got there found that one of the girls had managed to climb up higher than her friends and had already been pulled up to safety.

Firefighters say the other two girls who were still trapped about three metres below were wet through, cold and in distress because the tide was rising and waves were breaking close to them.

Both of them were quickly brought up the wall after a firefighter was lowered down to them with a rescue harness.

The three girls weren't hurt but were very cold and upset by the ordeal so paramedics took them to the hospital to get checked out.

Jersey Coastguard say it's really important to check tide times, especially during large spring tides.

They said: “This incident is a reminder of how easy and dangerous it is to become cut off by the tide. Jersey has some of the largest tides in the world and it is important you are aware of the tide times when on the coast.

“We are currently experiencing large spring tides that will peak at just over 12m this Saturday. Whenever you are on the coast always keep an eye on the tide and make sure you leave plenty of time to safely reach shore.

“You should have a means of calling for help such as a mobile phone or VHF radio and make sure someone onshore is aware of your plans. In an emergency on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
