Terrorism expert sworn in as new Police Chief

A Senior Commander for the Manchester Arena and London Bridge terror attacks, as well as the Croydon tram crash, has been sworn in as Jersey's new Police Chief in the Royal Court.

Robin Smith is taking up the post after it remained unfilled for more than a year following the death of Rob Bastable in 2018.

“I’m hugely excited and genuinely honoured to become the Chief Officer of the States of Jersey Police," the new Chief said following his swearing in.

“I’ve been really impressed by what I have seen thus far and I am especially grateful for the warm welcome I have received from the Police Force, our partners and the Islanders I have met.

“I recognise that I have much to learn about Jersey and how to most effectively protect this unique island community. My commitment is to do just that, using the next few weeks to really get to know the Island, the people and my team."

Mr Smith brings with him over 30 years’ experience in several executive positions in areas ranging from counter terrorism, firearms command, public order, public protection and safeguarding.

His most recent role was Assistant Chief Constable for the British Transport Police.

He was also previously the Deputy Chief Constable of the Sussex and Surrey Police - a role in which he had responsibility for day-to-day policing, including corporate development, professional standards, anti-corruption and corporate communications.
