Time to get out and vote!

Wednesday 15 October 2014

It’s election day – your chance to take charge, have your say, and show a few of Jersey’s politicians to the exit door.

Islanders who are registered to vote have until 8 pm to cast their ballots for Senators, Constables and Deputies, and to have their say in the referendum on whether the Constables should sit in the States.

Full details of who is standing are on the election section on the Bailiwick Express website, and you can find out exactly where to cast your vote on www.vote.je.

For 12 hours every three-or-so years the public are actually in charge of this little Island, and get to pick the people who are going to make the big decisions about our future. And there are big questions looming – major issues including a new hospital, education reform, property tax and immigration are likely to be settled by the next States, there’s every reason to get out and vote for the candidates that best reflect your views.

A third of States seats were decided on nomination night when 17 politicians were re-elected automatically because no one stood against them, but there are still 32 seats up for grabs today: eight Senatorial roles, one Constable and 23 Deputies.

The politicians elected will be getting together soon to make the crucial decisions about who will lead States departments in the new Council of Ministers.

Polls are open from 8 am to 8 pm today – just be sure to take your photo ID. Expect the results – and the latest analysis – right here on Bailiwick Express throughout the night.
