TIPS: Keeping your pups cool as the 33C heatwave hits

Thursday 16 June 2022

With temperatures set to rocket to 33C today, Jersey’s top animal charity has shared important tips on keeping pets safe in the heatwave.

According to the JSPCA, owners should keep the following advice in mind:

  • Older, obese or short-nosed dogs are less tolerant of heat.

  • Provide access to clean and fresh water, and shade and cool surfaces (not carpet or fake grass).

  • Never walk dogs during the middle of the day, especially in direct sun.

  • Avoid walking on pavements, even during the evening. If the air temperature is 31C,the temperature of asphalt is 62 degrees. At 55C, an egg will fry in five minutes!

  • Never leave dogs in a car, not even for just a minute.

  • Never shave their coats (long-haired dogs can be trimmed).

  • Don’t rely on fans as they don’t cool off pets as effectively as they do people.

  • Wet the paws – this is a good way to help dogs cool off.

The animal charity has created an infographic and are asking those who are able to print it out and pop it in a window.

The graphic can be found HERE.
