A Les Quennevais student, who had recently travelled off-island, started having covid-19 symptoms after completing quarantine.
Up until today, everyone arriving in Jersey from abroad has been marked as travelling from a 'red' zone - meaning they can only leave isolation after a minimum of 10 days' quarantine and three negative tests.
The student's eventual positive test was included in last week's statistics as an inbound travel case, but the Government only shared the background to the "rare" incident today, having completed contact tracing over the weekend.
"The patient previously tested positive (inbound travel), completed their mandatory isolation period, returned a negative result and only re-tested positive following the later onset of symptoms. This is very rare," they said.
"All direct contacts are isolating and have been tested accordingly."
There are currently two active cases in Jersey, 26 tests are pending and 53 people have been named direct contacts and are isolating.
It is understood that Les Quennevais case has resulted in around 30 direct contacts.
