Police donate jewellery to Hospice

Three years’ worth of unclaimed jewellery is being donated to Jersey Hospice Care by the States Police.

The Police are able to donate any jewellery which has been left unclaimed for more than three months.

Superintendent James Wileman said: “We always strive to reunite owners with their property and we are successful most of the time, however, at times this simply can’t be done and possessions stay with us, unclaimed, for long periods of time.”

Some of the jewellery being donated to Jersey Hospice Care has been at Police HQ for as long as three years.

Supt. Wileman added: “Despite appeals to find owners we are sometimes left with items that we know hold some value and so I’m really pleased that we can dispose of these in a way that local charities can benefit. So many people living here in Jersey will have had some form of contact with Jersey Hospice Care, or will know someone that has, and I know that we all appreciate the work they do.”

The Police have chosen to donate the jewellery to the specialist palliative care charity in the knowledge that it will be professionally valued before being sold on.

Emelita Robbins, Chief Executive at Jersey Hospice Care, will collect the jewellery on behalf of Hospice. She said: "We’re delighted that States of Jersey Police have chosen to support Jersey Hospice Care, with this generous donation.”

"It costs £14,000 a day to run the charity, which cares for patients with any life limiting condition and supports their families. Support such as this is vital to ensure that we can continue to run all our services free of charge, 365 days a year."
