A burger, a jab and a side of chips

Friday 30 July 2021

Bel Royal's popular Kiosk food stall and the Royal Square are among the locations due to host a pop-up vaccination centre next week as part of a push to get more young people protected against covid.

Starting on Monday, the 'Rock Up' scheme will also see covid jabs offered at Springfield, Five Oaks and Les Quennevais across the week.

An ambulance will arrive at each location with a team of medics, and islanders will be able to get jabs there without an appointment on a first-come-first-served basis.

People will also be able to turn up and ask nurses any questions they have about the vaccines if they are uncertain.

No booking will be necessary, with people being accepted as long as they show their ID to the attending nurses.

Currently the offer is only available for first doses, though officials have said that they are considering administering second doses later on.

There will also be a waiting area for people to sit for 15 minutes post-jab, as there is at the Fort.

The latest vaccination figures show there has been a lag among the younger generations in getting the jab, with 38% of 18-29 year-olds still not having had a first dose, and 30% of those between 30-34 having not had one either.

Overall, 74% (73,964) of the population aged 16 and over have received both doses, accounting for 61% of the island's population in total.

Vaccination Programme, Operations Lead, Ross Barnes, said: “The latest stats show that over the past six weeks the number of under 40s who have now had both doses of the vaccine has risen from 25% to 65%.

"This big increase in islanders now protected for summer is being driven by couples and people coming with their friends.

“To help, we have now expanded the Vaccination Programme with walk-in clinics and rock-ups making it easier for all islanders to get their first covid vaccine."

He added: "I would urge anyone who has not yet had their first dose to rock up to one of the mobile clinics, get your vaccine and get protected for your summer.

“Certain stations will be open for a few hours over midday for islanders to go during their lunchbreak, and between 17:00 and 19:00 in the evenings when islanders are on their way home from work.

"Vaccination takes no longer than 20 minutes, including your 15 minute observation period, so rocking up by yourself or with your friends when you have a little spare time in your day couldn’t be easier."
