Van driver who broke speed limit fined alongside boss

A man who broke the speed limit in a van he wasn't insured to drive – and his employer who allowed him to use it – have both been fined.

Daniel Steven Turmel (25) drove the Volkswagen van at 40mph along Rue du Pont Marquet in St. Brelade, a road with a 30mph speed limit, on the morning of 24 September last year.

Turmel was 24 at the time, but the insurance policy for the vehicle only covered drivers aged 25 and over.

In the Magistrate's Court this week, he admitted one charge of speeding and one of driving without valid insurance.

The owner of the vehicle, Turmel’s employer Dane Sutton, admitted not checking that the vehicle's insurance covered Turmel. He told the court that his business had four vans and it had been an oversight.

Sutton (33) also admitted a separate charge of not informing vehicle licensing authorities of a change in his address in November.

Magistrate Bridget Shaw fined Turmel £100 for driving without insurance and an additional £80 for speeding.

She fined Sutton £1,500 for not having the correct insurance for the van and a further £300 for failing to report his change of address.
