Victoria College and VCP fees to rise

Tuesday 17 September 2019

Islanders with children at Victoria College primary and secondary schools will have to pay higher fees, in a move that will earn the schools an extra £500,000.

The change to fees was approved by the Education Minister and made public last week.

The schools’ governing body first requested to hike the fees earlier this year, but wrote to parents in May to express their regret that they had not yet heard from the Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES) department and would therefore not be able to provide a term’s notice.

Following Ministerial approval, fees will now stand at £1,916 per term from September 2019 and £2,060 per term commencing January 2020 at Victoria College, while those with children at Victoria College Prep (VCP) will pay £1,899 per term from September 2019 and £2,042 per term commencing January 2020.

A 5% fee increase for the 2020-21 academic year put forward by the governing body of Victoria College and VCP (£2,163 and £2,144 respectively) was also approved.

According to a report outlining the Education Minister’s decision, the fee increases will result in additional income for Victoria College of £361,000 in 2020 (“£191,000 arising from an increase of 7.5% from January 2020 plus a further £170,000 from September based on an additional 5% (on top of the 7.5%) for the academic year 2020-2021”).

Meanwhile, VCP will gain an additional £152,000 in 2020.

This, the report said, was “circa £81,000 arising from an increase of 7.5% from January 2020 plus a further £71,000 from September based on an additional 5% (on top of the 7.5%) for the academic year 2020-2021.”

The report explained that the fee increases are to help both schools meet “anticipated costs”.

The schools aren’t the only ones to hike their fees recently: Jersey College for Girls and Jersey College Prep also put up their fees as they look to grow and expand their offering.
