VIDEO: Recycling centre inferno extinguished after seven-hour battle

Friday 22 September 2017

A large-scale blaze sparked in a pile of old computers and electrical parts in the Recycling Centre was successfully extinguished last night following a seven-hour battle.

The La Collette fire broke out shortly after 16:00 yesterday.

Two Red Watch fire engines were sent to the scene, where large plumes of smoke billowed from a container at the site.

They helped to contain the initial blaze, but support was later called in, with 20 firefighters using breathing apparatus and two medium jets working to bring the flames under control by the end of the evening.

Video: 20 'on call' and 'on duty' firefighters worked with DfI officials to extinguish the blaze shortly after 23:00 last night.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) also provided assistance with diggers, which were used to break down the pile of computers and batteries to assist cooling.

By 23:15 - around seven hours after the blaze broke out - the Fire and Rescue Service reported on social media that the fire had been extinguished.

It is the second fire to occur in the La Collette area this year. Lubricants in a PDJ Stores store room caught fire over the summer, leading to all workers being evacuated.
