WATCH: 47 medals… and counting!

It might be known as the 'friendly games', but the competition at the top of the medals table is heating up, with Jersey and the Isle of Man vying for first place, as the Island Games reaches its midpoint.

As usual, Team Jersey is showing particular prowess in shooting and swimming – having collected 15 medals in each sport so far in Gibraltar.

Having kicked off the competition with great promise, particularly in the triathlon events, Jersey briefly topped the medal table before relinquishing their winning position to the Isle of Man – a team with just one more gold medal under their belt. 

Overall, Jersey has an even spread of medals with 15 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze – totalling 47 at the mid-stage of the competition.

Jersey picked up five more gold medals throughout the second day of the competition, including one for the 110metre hurdles race which was won by athlete Peter Irving.

The athletics events saw Jersey’s men give a strong performance so far with Nathan Thomas winning silver and Cameron Campbell collecting bronze.

Swimmer Harry Shamalon went for the hat-trick, bringing home his third gold medal in the 100metre butterfly race.

Female swimmers also secured medals across a range of races with Gemma Atherley and Lily Scott winning silver and bronze respectively.

Jersey’s shooting teams are continuing to do well in the inter-island contest as Toby Baillon and Cameron Pirouet went for gold in the smallbore rifle event.

Several shooting individual and team finals will be taking place today and Team Jersey will be represented in sports across the board including the men’s basketball quarter finals, sailing races and tennis players are reaching a crucial stage in the competition.
