"Continuous pressure" pushes up water costs by 4p a day

Thursday 17 January 2019

Households will have to pay 4p more per day on average for water from April.

Jersey Water announced the 3.8% rise in the prices for water and standing charges this morning, stating that it was due to the "continuous pressure" of new laws, quality control and the need to manage supply of the finite resource.

Helier Smith, Jersey Water's Chief Executive, said that the latest increase, which is below the most recent inflation figure of 4.3%, is consistent with the company's 20-year-old policy to limit annual price increases.

In order to manage the rise, the Chief Executive is now urging islanders to become more water efficient, which he said will help them manage the impact of price rises, while also preserving Jersey's finite water resources.

Last year, Jersey Water implemented a new water efficiency calculator, which allows customers to compare their water consumption with the local average and suggests specific ways in which they can reduce both their water consumption and energy use.

The company also said they will be providing customers with free water saving devices, including tap aerators, shower timers and saves, as well as cistern bags.

Mr Smith added that Jersey Water is continuing to focus on its Water Resources Management Plan, which aims to identify what needs to be done to ensure sufficient water resources over the next 25 years.

"The Company will consult with stakeholders on proposed measures to address any water quality and resource challenges and their impact on future charges, which will need to reflect the importance of addressing those challenges to meet the expectations of Jersey residents and businesses," he said.
