Weight off gym-goers' minds as Fort closure delayed

Tuesday 30 August 2022

Gym-users at the Fort will be able to stay until at least the end of the year before they have to move out - and the Playzone will also be staying open longer than first thought.

Both the gym, in the far north of the waved roof, and the soft play area, were due to close next month as part of a wider plan to redevelop the Regency fortification as a “cultural and leisure destination”.

Part of that proposal, which could include a winter garden, hotel, large arena, cinema, bowling alley and casino, involves finding new homes for its current sporting and leisure occupants.

Replacing the Active gym is an enlarged workout area at Springfield Stadium; however, its opening has been delayed.

A Government spokesperson said: “Due to delays with the construction of the new Active gym at Springfield, the opening of the facility will unfortunately be later in the year than originally expected.

“We will advise Active customers of the new re-opening date as soon as it is confirmed, but we expect the work will take at least a further three months to complete. We apologise for the delay and thank customers for their patience.”

The spokesperson added that the soft play area would stay open for now.

He said: “It had originally been anticipated that the Playzone would close at the same time as Fort Regent’s Active gym.

“We are now looking for resources to keep the Playzone open while alternative facilities for soft play are considered.

“There are no immediate plans to close the Playzone.”

Active members can also use the gym and swimming pool at Les Quennevais.
