If your event is already billed as an 'extreme' endurance challenge, how do you go one better next year? That's the question facing the organisers of the Silkworth Extreme Team Challenge following what they describe as an "amazing" event this year.
A total of 182 people in 18 teams took part in the endurance relay race last Saturday, all trying to work their way around the full 12 parishes - to represent the 12 steps of recovery from addiction - in as quick a time as possible. The ten race stages took place at sea, along cliff paths and on roads as competitors competed by running, cycling, swimming and kayaking.
As well as being a challenge for the participants, the event is designed to raise money for the Silkworth Charity Group which is a non-profit organisation created to support Islanders and their families who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction.
First home, for the second year running, was the team from De La Salle, who completed all stages in 4hrs 39 minutes. They were a full twenty minutes ahead of 'Where's Clifford?' in second place, who in turn beat 'The Girls and Other' into third place by just two minutes.
As well as being a challenge for the participants, the event is designed to raise money for the Silkworth Charity Group which is a non-profit organisation created to support Islanders and their families who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction.
This year the event raised close to £15,000 which will be used to set up a new day program to provide support to Islanders with addiction on an 'out-patient' basis, and also a family support program to make sure that the family members of those trying to overcome addiction aren't forgotten.
Silkworth's CEO Jason Wyse commented: "We can now provide the full set of treatments around addiction which is wonderful. Gradually we're going to expand the event in the future, and are now looking at what else we can bring in to add another element, as well as setting up a full organising committee. We're going to grow the event year-on-year so that it becomes a key part of the Island's sporting calendar."
The Silkworth Extreme Team Challenge is organised by Silkworth and Kazz Padidar of Wild Adventures.
