Woman arrested over Guinea pig thefts

Thursday 23 January 2020

A 26-year-old woman has been arrested after turning up at Police HQ with two Guinea pigs that were stolen from a pet shop earlier this week.

A spokesperson for the Force said the two Guinea pigs, which were taken following a break-in at Pets Paradise in the early hours of Monday, were "safe and well."

The arrest comes after an appeal for witnesses to the rodent robbery issued this morning.

In their call for more information, Police explained that the pigs - one of which was black and white, and the other white with red eyes - were pilfered between 02:45 and 03:45 from Pets Paradise, and that the suspected perpetrator dropped a number of pet harnesses in the children’s play area in People’s Park. The shop's window was smashed in the process.

But shortly after 15:30 this afternoon (Thursday 23 January), Police announced that the missing pigs had been returned to Pets Paradise.

A statement read: "A 26 year old female presented herself with the Guinea pigs at PHQ Reception this afternoon, she was interviewed and subsequently arrested.

"She remains in custody at this time."
