A Jersey photographer has become the youngest finalist in a worldwide competition, with his shot of a passing cruise ship being recognised alongside leading international talents.

Cameron Aird, who uses drones to create his impactful aerial shots, has been commended as part of an international photography competition – becoming the awards’ youngest finalist at just 18 years old.

Express caught up with the young photography talent about the recognition which has drawn national and international attention.

Making it to the top 50 of this year’s Agora Awards, Cameron’s photo of a cruise ship called ‘Out at Sea – MSC Orchestra’ captured the judge’s attention making the top 50 out of 130,000 submissions.

The Awards claim to find the best photo of the year, with this year’s title being won by acclaimed Ghanaian photographer Michael Aboya.

Speaking to Express about his achievement, Cameron said: “Being so young and keeping up with some of the world’s leading photographers makes me feel both overwhelmed and driven to create a higher standard of work.

"It’s moments like these that help you remember your self-worth in this industry and help you discover your deeper love for what it is you love to do.”

Having always been fascinated by cruise ships, Cameron had to stay on top of the liners’ schedules as they drew close to Jersey in order to get the perfect shot.

He explained that in a small place, it’s really important to constantly be looking for original ideas for photos.

“With Jersey’s limits on locations there was no better feeling than capturing an image which no other local photographer would have had the opportunity to capture.

“I have always been inspired by the thought of capturing cruise ships for their outstanding size and elegance. It has always amazed me how tonnes of weight can stay afloat above the water."

Currently, Cameron is interning for one of Jersey’s major photography studios, Studio M.
